A day in the life of a mum without a car...

After watching an episode of the new series of Outnumbered where the family become stranded without a car, I found myself suddenly aware of just how vulnerable not having a car would make me. Sure, it works, but it isn't easy, It creates loads of extra work, it is stressful and it can get very messy. A bit like my two year old.

It's a normal weekday at the end of February, it's raining and it's cold. Today I have no car because the alternator belt broke a few days ago and the garage are still waiting for the part.

I get up an extra hour early as I will need to take the bus to get my ten year old and two year old to school and nursery. The bus is hourly so I need to take one a full 44 minutes earlier than necessary to be there in time for school at 8.30 which will leave me stuck with a two year old until nursery starts at 9am.

I rush the kids out of the door and run to the bus stop, dragging my toddler behind me. We see the bus coming but are no where near the bus stop so I send my ten year old running up the busy main road to stick her hand out for the bus. She drops half of her PE kit out of her bag in the process and the impatient bus driver tuts to himself as I shuffle on to the bus, PE kit in one arm, toddler in the other and take the ticket with my mouth.

School run done and I now have a full half hour to wait with a two year old. We take shelter from the rain in the Spar, and I get bombarded with: “Mum, I want Sweets”.

Home at last, I dry off and settle down for a nice cup of tea. School ring... I forgot my ten year old's lunch...!

Here's how my day should have gone:

It's a normal weekday at the end of February, it's raining and it's cold. Today I should have no car because the alternator belt broke a few days ago and the garage are still waiting for the part.

St Albans Car and Van Hire are just around the corner so my husband hired a car from them.

Lovely cup of tea.
