Childwickbury, situated between St. Albans and Harpenden, in Hertfordshire, is very well known in the area for its annual fairs – the Childwickbury Art and Music Fair, and the magical Childwickbury Christmas Fair.
The three-day arts and music festival takes place during July and brings to the spotlight a number of featured artists and an array of music and foods.
The arts fair was established in 2003 by artist Christiane Kubrick. Christiane had always wanted to organise this type of event, representing those things important to her: art; music; involving people in creativity. Providing her magnificent home and grounds as the location for the fair – Childwickbury Manor – its popularity has grown steadily over the years and includes craft demonstrations and educational activities, as well as a chance to meet the artists and discuss their work.
Christiane is a featured artist at the fair, displaying her oil paintings, watercolours, printing works, etching, and computer art to name just a few of her talents. Other featured artists this year included Tony Laverick (ceramics), Angela Allaway (woodland artistry), Oli Fowler (screen printing and graphic design), and Eeles Pottery.
Christiane also holds monthly painting courses at her home (which she bought with film director Stanley Kubrick in 1978, and which were used to complete his films The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut). If you fancy trying your hand at the type of art Christiane produces, why not give it a try?
The success of this summer event paved the way to the magical Childwickbury Christmas Market, held during the last week in November. Again this is a hugely popular event. If you enjoy visiting the Christmas markets, why not hire a car from St. Albans Car and Van Hire and do a tour of these events in the local area. We’re sure the Childwickbury Christmas Market will not disappoint!
