Places to visit around St. Albans

There are many villages in the vicinity of St. Albans, which might be worth a little drive to. Here are just a few of our suggestions…

In the village of Frogmore, just two miles south of St. Albans, in the civil parish of St. Stephen, there is a working water wheel at the Beefeater Moor Mill steak restaurant, the building being over 250 years old and which used to be a working mill. It is certainly a characteristic place to have some lunch or a drink before heading back to St. Albans Car and Van Hire.

If it’s more of home-cooked type meal you’re after, then how about trying the Toby Carvery, Oaklands. Calling themselves the ‘home of the roast’, they claim their chefs “lay on a feast of tender, hand-carved meats with all the trimmings – including towering Yorkshire puds, golden roasties with all those lovely little crunchy bits, and plenty of freshly prepared veg, all crowned with proper gravy”.

To walk off the meal, or maybe just somewhere for an outdoor excursion, why not pay a visit to Potterswood Park, near Borehamwood? This Woodland Trust park has a great mixture of features, with an open grassy area with benches to relax on, and a playground where the kids can burn off some energy. There is a path that meanders through wooded areas filled with oak, beech, hornbeam and poplar trees - a lovely place to visit for a break from the car.

If you’re interested in fine art, then a visit to Victoria Fine Art in Porters Wood is a must. From 19th century British and European art to marine, impressionist, Victorian and contemporary painting, this art gallery has dealers on-hand to provide professional advice on their wide range of artwork, including framing, hanging, insurance and collecting.
